It had always been a dream to go to Cuba, so when life got heavy, my sister and I decided to just do it — a last-minute adventure that turned into days of walking, drinking an alarming number of Cuba Libres, and smoking cigars under the sun (and rain).

What struck me most, though, was the people. People often approached us, which at first we brushed off in typical tourist fashion. But after a while I realised that many Cubans are simply sociable — they love to chat with strangers as though they were old friends.

It’s that open, easy friendliness that I really took away from this trip. Viñales captures a little of that feeling: the earthy scent of the valley, a hint of smokiness, and the gentle sweetness of tonka.
